The first challenge for the third graders will be to create a device that will propel a cotton ball after the forces on that cotton ball have lost their zero net force.

The second challenge for the third graders:

As an engineer, your task is to create a catapult game where an aluminum foil ball can be launched and then land in a container and stay in that container. You will assign different amounts of points for landing in the different containers. You can have the same type of container or you can have different types of containers. You will need to construct your game with the given materials, but how you construct it is entirely up to your team.

Force is a  push or pull on an object. A force can cause an object to speed up, slow down, change shape or stay in one place.

Work occurs when a force acts on an object to move it from its starting point.

Energy Energy is the ability to do work. Energy is how things move and change. It is all around us and takes many forms.

Potential Energy Potential Energy is energy that is stored.

Kinetic Energy Kinetic Energy is energy that is moving. It is also called energy of motion.


Inertia is when an object will not change in its motion; that includes a change in direction or a change in speed. An object will stay still or keep moving at the same speed and in a straight line, unless an outside force acts on it causing it to change.


Gravity is the force of attraction between two objects.


An engineer is a person who designs and builds products, machines, systems, or structures. Engineers want to know how and why things work. They have scientific training that they use to make practical things. Often, they are presented with a problem and design a way to solve that problem.
