first challenge for the fourth graders will be to work with a systems model to
demonstrate how energy is transferred from one object to another.

Your task is to take the role of a large team of engineers. The team will be broken down into several smaller teams in order to create many products that will solve the challenge that we've been given.
Our overall challenge is to create a fleet of vehicles that will be powered by air to carry as heavy a payload as far as possible. Your team will need to overcome friction, mass, and gravity by creating enough thrust to move the vehicle forward. The design is up to your team, but you will need to use the given materials as your constraints. The best vehicle systems will be able to carry the load a long distance.
Develop a team name and report that to me as you work. Step one will be to meet with your team, develop a name, and discuss your plan. Good teams work well together, listen to each other, respect each other and share ideas. If a team has a great idea, should that idea be shared with other teams? Of course; this is collaboration, not competition!
is a push or pull on an object. A force can cause an object to
speed up, slow down, change shape or stay in one place.
||Work occurs when a force acts on an object to move it from its starting point.
Energy is the ability to do work. Energy is how things move and change. It is all around us and takes many forms.
Potential Energy is energy that is stored.
|Kinetic Energy||Kinetic Energy is energy that is moving. It is also called energy of motion.
||Inertia is when an object will not change in its motion; that includes a change
in direction or a change in speed. An object will stay still or keep
moving at the same speed and in a straight line, unless an outside
force acts on it causing it to change.
||Friction is the resistance of motion when objects rub against each other.
||Thrust is a force, a push. When a system pushes mass in one direction, there is thrust just as large in the opposite direction.
pressure is the force of the air that presses on objects. To make the
balloon move, we need more air pressure coming from the balloon than
what is pushing on the balloon.
||-Gravity is the force of attraction between two objects.
Third Law of Motion states that for every action, there is an equal and
opposite reaction and they are equal in strength.
||An engineer is a person who designs and builds products,
machines, systems, or structures. Engineers want to know how and why
things work. They have scientific training that they use to make
practical things. Often, they are presented with a problem and design a
way to solve that problem.
