Global Awareness

In the gold rush, there were many different cultures and a lot of discrimination. There were Native Americans, Chilenos, and Chinese. All these cultures came to California to strike it rich. Some families were very poor and wanted to get money to help with their hunger, and lack of needed supplies. In some places, it was better in America than where they lived, so people came to America to escape.

American miners treated other cultures terribly. Native Americans were driven out of their land and had their streams polluted. They also had their wildlife scared away. Chilenos were beaten, robbed, and had to pay high taxes. The Chinese were given the worst treatment of all. They were highly discriminated against by Americans, along with only being able to mine where nobody wanted to mine, or where whites had already mined. They also had their homes and businesses destroyed. These cultures made the gold rush a global event.
