Fractions!

The seventh chapter of the fifth grade math book focuses on the basic concepts of fractions. The standards for chapter 7 are:

 Chapter 7

Number Sense: Students understand the relationship between decimals and fractions.
Number Sense: Compare and order positive fractions and mixed numbers.
Number Sense: Determine the prime factors of all the numbers through 50 and write the numbers as the product of their prime factors by using exponents to show multiples of a factor.
Number Sense: Explain equivalents of fractions.
Number Sense: Identify and represent on a number line, fractions and mixed numbers.
Number Sense: Determine the least common multiple and the greatest common divisor of whole numbers.
Number Sense: Understand that many whole numbers break down in different ways.
Mathematical reasoning: Use a variety of methods, such as words, numbers, symbols, charts, graphs, tables, diagrams, and models to explain mathematical reasoning.
Mathematical reasoning: Express the solution clearly and logically by using the appropriate mathematical notation and terms and clear language; support solutions with evidence in both verbal and symbolic work.
Mathematical reasoning: Make precise calculations and check the validity of the results from the context of the problem.

This chapter connects with previous and future learning in this way:

Looking Ahead

In grade 4 math, students learned how to identify parts of a whole and parts of a set. They also learned how to compare and order fractions.  In this chapter, students will learn how to find and use the greatest common factor (GCF) and the least common multiple (LCM) to write equivalent fractions. They will also learn how to compare and order mixed numbers. In chapter 8, students will learn how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers.

The chapter has three sections of problem solving where the students are introduced to new strategies or are asked to apply previously learned concepts in new problems. The strategies for the fourth chapter are:

Draw the model which would help solve this problem:

Alex, Beth, and Sarah buy a pizza and cut it into 8 equal pieces. Alex eats 1/4 of the pizza,
Beth eats 3/8 of the pizza and Sarah eats the rest. What part of the pizza did Sarah eat?

Continue the patterns:
