Reading Strategies 
These are the reading strategies
that will be emphasized to increase reading comprehension. They
are key elements in the instruction of reading. To further aid
your child in increasing comprehension, it would be helpful to
guide your child in these strategies as s/he reads at home.
Infer/Predict:
Look for important information
Think about the title, illustrations,
and what you have read so far
Tell what you think will happen next
or what you will learn
Try to figure out things that the author
does not say directly
Self-Question:
Ask
questions to answer for yourself as you read and when you re done
Think About Words:
Figure out words by using context, sounds, and word
parts
Think about the sounds of the letters
Blend the sounds to read the word
Think of similar words
Read to the end of the sentence or paragraph
Look at the illustrations
Monitor:
Ask yourself if the material you are
reading makes sense to you
Ask yourself if the reading meets your
purpose-are you learning what you need to learn?

Summarize:
Think about story parts
Think about main ideas
Summarize as you read and after you have read
Use your own words to tell the important parts of what
you have read
Evaluate:
Do you agree with what you read?
How do you feel about what you read?
Are you learning what you want to know?
How good a job has the author done?
